RM2DGBR3B–A 19th century view of the main gatehouse to Raglan Castle, a late medieval castle north of the village of Raglan in Monmouthshire, south Wales. The modern castle dates from circa 16th century, when successive ruling families of the Herberts and the Somersets created a luxurious, fortified castle. During the English Civil War the castle was held on behalf of Charles I but taken by Parliamentary forces in 1646. In the aftermath, the castle was dismantled; after the restoration of Charles II, the Somersets declined to restore the castle and it became a romantic ruin.

The old castle was erected by the family of De la Mere, and subsequently garrisoned by Charles I. After a stubborn resistance it was destroyed by the Parliamentary forces, in 1643. In the church, possessing, in common with many others in Somersetshire, a tower of great architectural beauty, are some remarkable monuments to the De la Mere family'.
